National Capital Area Cake Show

So, what is the National Capital Area Cake Show you may ask?!  Well it is a two day event held at Northern Virginia Community College that focuses on all things sugar.  There is a live cake challenge like you see on Food Network, displays of amazing cakes and sugar art, hands-on classes and demos and interactive classes for kids.  All in all, a day about cakes and the amazing things you can do with sugar, definitely my kind of event.

My friend Keisha, a fellow sweets and baking lover, suggested that we buy the LivingSocial deal for this and I happily obliged, because I’ve never been one to turn down a possibility of cake-eating.  It was a fun afternoon, and although most of the topics are a little above our abilities (think gum paste and fondant) we still got some fun new ideas for cake and cupcake decorating.  Mainly from the Luck’s representative table.  They have some great ideas for decorating and they are do-able with just regular icing instead of fondant.  We will experiment with these and share at a later time, for sure!

Here are some of the amazing cakes we saw:
I want to make this baby cake for someone!!!

Also, this cake was crazy!!  I can’t imagine the time and effort it took to make this:

Ali, what a beautiful pie. Growing up in Wisconsin we ate a lot of rhubarb! We would even grab a stalk right from the plant! You know kids…they love sour stuff. My mom made great pies and even a rhubarb and strawberry jam.

    Keep up the great blog!

    K.K.
